A do-it-yourself well in a country house is the pride of every owner. Often, wells are erected even if the house has running water – just to decorate the site. Of course, the construction of a well is far from possible in every territory, sometimes the aquifer is too deep, and then you have to drill a well. You can learn how to make a well with your own hands, see photos of all stages of construction and get expert advice by reading this article.
Previously, when landscaping a summer cottage, a well was simply a necessity. At present, in addition to its main function, a well built by oneself has become an integral part of landscape design.
Construction is best started in the fall when the water horizon is at its lowest. Of course, before you make a well in a summer cottage, you need to make a small study of the area and determine the depth of the aquifer. If there are active wells nearby, the task is simplified.
The most reliable way to find water is exploratory drilling. If as a result of research it turns out that the aquifer is located at a depth of no more than 20m, you can safely proceed to construction.
Diy Construction of a Well: Laying Rings
So, how to make a well with your own hands to not only provide the farm with clean water but also to decorate the site? The most common design is well made of reinforced concrete rings.
Look at the photo on how to make a well: the first ring is laid in a dug hole, the next – on a dropped ring. Soil is selected from under the lower ring – and the rings are lowered under their own weight. Thus, the column is extended up to the aquifer. The approach of the aquifer is determined by a noticeable cooling – the air temperature in the good drops by 1-2 degrees, mini fontanels appear on the walls of the mine.
During the construction of a well, quite often you can encounter the so-called high water – underground water located at a relatively shallow depth above the water-resistant formation. For water supply, the overhead water is usually not used, since it does not have time to filter out from the soil, seeping through the soil.
When driving a mine, it is isolated: one or two lower joints between the rings from the inside are sealed with a solution. Water intake occurs from below. After the solution has set, the sinking of the well continues. In an aquifer, as a rule, from one to two rings are installed.
After that, all remaining joints from the inside are sealed with a solution with the addition of liquid glass, the bottom of the well is covered with a layer of gravel 20-30 cm high (fraction 5-25 cm), which will serve as a filter for incoming water. The annulus is covered with gravel and sand, tamped with clay from above to prevent rain and meltwater from entering the well.
The upper ring is located above ground level to protect from snow and dirt. The joint waterproofing between the upper ring and the entire column is performed especially carefully.
After the water level in the well becomes sufficient to immerse the “Kid” pump, it is necessary to pump out water several times to “swing” the well.
How to Make a Well in the Country With Your Own Hands: Erection of the Tip
The next stage of how to make a well in the country is the construction of the head. The most spectacular are the wells, the upper part (head) of which is decorated in the form of a wooden log house.
Pay attention to the photo of the well with your own hands: in this case, the log house can be assembled around the upper concrete ring. As a result, such a well will be not only functional but also a decorative element in the landscape design of your site.
To erect a wellhead in the form of a wooden log house, you will need a 30–40 mm thick plank, round timber or a log with a diameter of 180–220 mm. Instead of logs, you can also use a bar with a cross-section of about 150 × 150 mm.
Prepare the material. If you are dealing with Roundwood, then, in this case, it should be cleaned of bark, sanded, remove knots and treated with an antiseptic. Then the logs need to be sorted by increasing diameter because a forest of a larger diameter will fall on the lower crowns of the log house than on the upper ones. If you opted for logs or timber, it is also better to treat them with an antiseptic. It is desirable to do this even if you are convinced that this has already been done at the factory.
To make a well on the site, mark the position and dimensions of the log house on the ground. Over the entire area of the future structure, remove the soil to a depth of at least 150 mm. Pour a layer of rubble, gravel or pebbles into the resulting pit and ram it. It is desirable to pour concrete over the stone “pillow” and, after hardening, arrange waterproofing from several layers of roofing material.
Cut logs or beams into blanks of the required length. It should be borne in mind that the head usually has dimensions from 1000 x 1000 mm to 1500? 1500 mm. The number of blanks depends on the diameter (thickness) of the material you are using – the tip should rise about 750 mm above the ground.
When assembling the log house, it should be borne in mind that among the many types of cutting corners, in practice 2 methods are most often used – “into the bowl” and “into the paw”. When chopping “into the bowl” the ends (remnants) of the logs protrude beyond the walls of the log house. Therefore, this species is also sometimes called cutting with the remainder. The ends of the logs most often protrude beyond the borders of the corner of the log house by about 200-300 mm.
The technology of cutting walls “in the paw” (sometimes this type of cutting is also called “in the corner”) is different in that the logs do not protrude beyond the corners of the log house. The ends of the logs in the corners are connected by a secret tooth (paw).
The method of joining a “half-tree” beam is that at the corners of the bars of the upper or lower crown, half of their thickness is removed.
When constructing a well with your own hands, put antiseptic-treated or tarred boards on a waterproofing layer around the entire perimeter of the prepared site. The assembly of the wellhead begins with the laying of the first (flange) crown of thicker logs hewn from below. Then, the final assembly of the crowns is successively performed.
To make the log house more stable, it is recommended that the logs of each crown be connected with each other with special round or rectangular spikes – pins. Before installing them, a through-hole is drilled in the log with a partial capture of the log of the underlying crown. The pins are clogged into the holes to failure. The remaining unbroken portion of the Nagel is cut flush with the plane of the beam using a chisel.
Now that you know how to make a well, cover all the wooden parts with several layers of colorless or tinted varnish.
A wooden gate with a metal handle is installed above the well. A chain or cable is attached to the collar and a bucket is tied.
As you can see in the photo, the wells in the country, built by yourself, are not only functional but also very beautiful structures!
Drilling of a Well on the Seasonal Dacha
Wells often do not allow water to be drawn from deep aquifers with quality water, which is why many today prefer a well. Wells are built at a depth of 30 m or more. With their help, it is possible to take not only groundwater but also occurring more deeply, which makes it possible to obtain high-quality drinking water. The good construction process includes drilling a wellbore, equipping it with pipes and a filter, pumping and installing a pump. Depending on the depth of the aquifer, its structure and the nature of the overlying rocks, the well may have a different design and differ in the structure of the water intake part. There are many methods for manual drilling of wells, but all of them require special equipment, tools, and devices, so it is best to invite specialists to carry out these works.
